While we optimize our routers for our network to bring you the best internet performance, you're free to use your own router. You'll just want to be sure it's suited to support the speed of your fiber internet plan. Different speed tiers have different technical requirements.

How do I know if I can use my own router?

How do I change my SSID?

To change your SSID (the network name and password), type the IP address into a browser. This information can be found on a sticker on the side or bottom of your router.

What if I want to change or upgrade my router?

For changes or upgrades, visit our help center or contact our support team via chat or by calling 1.866.MYZIPLY.

Can I use my modem for fiber internet service?

Fiber internet technology uses an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) rather than a modem, which is designed for cable. When fiber internet is installed, the technician will hook up the ONT and the compatible router. You may connect your own router to the ONT, as long as it’s compatible with your internet service.

Do I need an ONT?

Yes, all fiber internet plans require an ONT. This is included in installation and must be installed by a licensed technician. Learn more about what equipment is needed with your fiber internet service on our blog: What equipment is needed for fiber internet?

What if my internet speed is slower than what I pay for?

WiFi speeds are always slower than wired Ethernet connections. If your connection is noticeably slowing down, try turning off your router or unplugging your WiFi extender for a minute.
